Many AKC events are open for all dogs to enjoy, including mixed-breed dogs.

There are plenty of opportunities to get involved in sports and events, as the American Kennel Club holds more than 22,000 events each year and there are opportunities you can explore on your own!

SEKC hosts a variety of events each year and the best way to become familiar with a sport is to attend or help with an event or take a class. Classes are held quarterly and cover family dog skills as well as dog sport skills.

Children can help at events, too, and get involved in AKC dog sports through the Pee Wee Special Attraction program and Junior Showmanship.

Kids can also participate in a 4-H Dog Project helps 4-H members learn to become responsible dog owners. 4-H members typically own or lease their project dog (purebred or mixed breed) for the 4-H year.

Dog not registered with AKC?

The Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) allows unregistered dogs of registrable breeds to compete in AKC Performance and Companion Events, as well as specific breeds in the FSS® Program that are eligible for Companion Events. If your dog is not registered with the AKC or is a mixed-breed dog, you can still earn titles in all performance sports! All dogs that are not eligible for AKC Purebred Registration or the AKC Purebred Alternative Listing (PAL) can join the AKC Canine Partners™ Program.

AKC Sports for Fun and Titles

There are many canine sports to choose from, and many people participate in more than one. But when you’re just starting out, it can be hard to decide which one to try first. Start by assessing your dog’s appearance, health, and temperament.

  • Think your dog is a perfect example of their breed? Try showing your purebred dog in Conformation.

  • Is your dog highly energetic? Do they enjoy running and responding to instructions? If so, Agility could be a great fit.

  • Has your dog mastered basic commands such as sit, stay, and heel? Do they seem eager to learn more? Try Obedience.

  • Is your dog a scent sleuth? Can they find their food or toys by smell alone? Try AKC Scent Work.

  • Does your dog like doing obedience work in a low-stress environment? Have you never competed before? AKC Rally is a great place to start.

  • Does your dog have an instinct to chase? Are they speedy? Try running the Coursing Ability Test or Fast CAT.

  • Will your dog follow a scent no matter where it may lead? Do they work well independently? Try Tracking.

  • Think your dog has a natural instinct for livestock? Herding is a sport for purebred dogs bred to herd, and the Farm Dog Certified Test is for all dogs.

  • Do you have a small Terrier or Dachshund? Have the vermin in your yard met their match? Earthdog tests might be for you.

  • Is your dog a sighthound? Lure Coursing may be just their speed.

  • Is your dog a Pointing Breed, Spaniel, Retriever, or Hound? Explore the rich tradition of Field Events.

  • If you have a Coonhound, does your dog run whenever given the chance? Are they an explorer? Do they have high bursts of energy, and then crash? Find a Coonhound event near you.

AKC Title Recognition Programs

The AKC will recognize titles earned by dog and handler teams in these sports:

 â€‹

  • Diving Dogs Almost any dog can do it, as long as he loves water, knows how to swim, and has a natural passion for retrieving.

  • Barn Hunt Dogs and their handlers work as a team to locate and mark rats (which are always safely held in aerated tubes) hidden in a maze of straw or hay bales.

  • Disc Dog has taken the basic game of fetch with a flying disc and expanded it into a whole bunch of fun games!

  • In Flyball, each dog dashes over a line of low hurdles to reach a box. Once there, they use their paws to push a spring-loaded pad and release a tennis ball into the air that they catch and bring back to their handlers. Once back to the starting line, the next dog takes his turn.

AKC Specialty Titles

  • Public Service Dog Titling Program honors and recognizes police dogs that assist our men and women in law enforcement.

  • Search and Rescue Title recognition is offered for FEMA certified Urban Search and Rescue dogs, as well as Wilderness Search and Rescue dogs.

  • Parent Club Performance Programs allow specific dog breeds to be acknowledged for successfully performing the functions for which they were developed. Here's a list of Parent Club Titles. Other breeds can participate in some of these programs such as carting.

  • Therapy Dog is an AKC program which recognizes the necessary therapy work performed by dogs through accepted organizations based on the number of visits.

Of course, each sport and event has it's own set of rules. Find them all here.

  • The Virtual Obedience Test provides an opportunity for handlers to train their dogs, evaluate their skills and teamwork, and get started earning titles in the sport of Virtual Obedience all from the comfort of home.

  • The qualifying scores and titles earned in the Rally Virtual Program are the same as those earned at in-person events.

  • The Virtual Scent Work Test provides dogs and owners a way to engage in an activity which utilizes a dog’s natural ability to detect search items.

  • Virtual Home Manners The evaluation of a dog’s ability to perform ten home manners skills will be done by a video recording. Two levels of Home Manners will be offered – Virtual Home Manners Puppy (VHMP) and Virtual Home Manners Adult (VHMA).

  • Virtual Trick Dog
    Have your tricks
    tested virtually by
    an AKC Approved
    CGC Evaluator.

  • In a Virtual Water
    Test
    , the owner or
    handler submits a
    video of a dog
    performing the
    water test. The dog’s
