About SEKC
Sioux Empire Kennel Club (SEKC) is an All Breed Club member of the American Kennel Club. As stated in our Constitution, SEKC has as a first priority promoting the quality of purebred dogs and doing all possible to bring their natural qualities to perfection. However, SEKC membership is not limited to those with “show” dogs: all dogs and their owners are welcome!
SEKC currently offers dog training in a number of canine sports as well as fundamental classes for puppies and adult dogs. We also host a variety of competitions throughout the year including Obedience, Agility, Scent Work and Conformation.
A quick overview of our history:
SEKC was founded in 1961 in Sioux Falls, SD by a group of dog enthusiasts. After permission was granted by the American Kennel Club (AKC) the local group held its first AKC licensed all breed conformation show on September 15, 1962.
The SEKC became a member of the AKC in September of 1968 with facilities located in the Sioux Falls Arena.
Upon leaving the Arena, the SEKC joined with the Sioux City, Iowa Kennel Club and the Worthington, MN Kennel Club for a combined show held in Vermillion, SD. After a few years, the clubs split and the SEKC returned to Sioux Falls where they continue to hold their annual Fall Show (Conformation/Obedience) in the Expo Building on the WH Lyon Fairgrounds in late October.
The first AKC sanctioned obedience match was June 16, 1963 with the first licensed obedience trial held in 1965.
On September 25, 1998 SEKC held its first AKC licensed agility trial outdoors at the Fairgrounds. In November 2018 the Club held its first Scent Work trial.
SEKC is a 501(c)4 nonprofit. Donations are not tax-deductible.
SEKC is a proud supporter of the Sioux Falls Area Humane Society. Please visit their website for information on how you can help or to adopt a pet!
