Beginner Retriever Obedience - Jamie Worrall

Saturdays, Jan 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 & Feb 7 - 8:30 AM - 9:30 AM

8 Student Max. 4 Students Min to hold the class. 

Prerequisites - This class is for RETRIEVER BREEDS ONLY.

Join us for this puppy and young-dog obedience class designed specifically for retriever field work. This course builds reliable obedience through meaningful engagement and clear communication. Students will learn to use play, food, and structured games to create a dog who wants to work. We'll focus on developing solid foundation skills - including feel position, recall, impulse control, and steadiness - while building confidence and enthusiam. Perfect for handlers who want a motivated, responsive partner in the field.

Beginner Agility - Rachel Weelborg

Mondays, Jan 12, 19, 26 & Feb 2, 9, 16 - 6:30 pm - 7:15 pm 

5 Student Max

Prerequisite – Basic Obedience skills.

This class is for the handler/dog team with no previous experience. In this beginner agility class we will cover some foundation skills and introduce equipment along with short sequences. Whether you are or aren’t planning to advance to different levels of agility, this will help you and your dog develop teamwork while having fun. This will also set your team up for Beginner Agility II.

Rally Novice - Karen Kelling

Mondays, Jan 12, 19, 26 & Feb 2, 9, 16 - 7:30 pm - 8:45 pm

Prerequisite – Basic Obedience skills.

Rally is a team sport between handler and dog as they navigate through stations that ask them to perform tasks. It is a wonderful next step to those who are looking for something to do with their dog after the Canine Good Citizen to increase their bond while having fun. While you are not required to be looking to compete, this class focuses on learning the ins and outs of competing in AKC Rally.

Basic Family Dog Skills - Karen Bos - Carey 

Tuesdays, Jan 20, Feb 3, 17, Mar 3, 17, 24 - 6:30 pm - 7:15 pm 

5 Student Min, 12 Student Max

Prerequisite – Dog must be 12 weeks or older.

Open to dogs 12 weeks or older who have not taken a training class or who want a refresher. This class will teach the handler and the dog basic obedience skills (walking on a loose leash, sit, down, stay and come) and “life” skills such as building focus and grooming, while also introducing the dog to new things and building confidence. The S.T.A.R. Puppy test is offered for free for dog up to one (1) year old who attend all six (6) weeks of class. IF the owner of a dog in this class wishes to also have their dog take the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Test, there will be an extra fee of $25.

Beyond the Basics – Karen Bos-Carey

Tuesdays, Jan 20, Feb 3, 17, Mar 3, 17, 24 - 7:30 pm - 8:15 pm 

5 Student Min, 12 Student Max

Open to dogs who have previously taken the SEKC Puppy Kindergarten or Fundamentals for the Family Dog classes. This class will reinforce skills learned in those classes, concentrating on the “Five D’s” of training: Distance, Duration, Distraction, Difficulty, and Diversification. The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) Test is offered for free to those taking this class.

If the owner of a dog in this class wishes to also have their dog take the S.T.A.R. Puppy Test, there will be an extra fee of $25. The dog must be less than one (1) year old, have attended all six (6) weeks of the class and complete any other requirements for the test either during the class or at the time of testing.

 

Going the Distance in Agility – Rachel Runge

Distance handling in agility benefits everyone! As two-legged creatures, we cannot keep up with our four-legged companions. Having effective foundation training to have dogs focus on obstacles and commit to taking them independently, without being constantly managed, allows them to gain confidence. We will focus on behaviors that will make distance handling in agility easier, using rewards to build distance skills, breaking down sequences, and adding distance to them and adding verbal’s. Please bring lots of snacks, lotus ball toys or good-toys that can be thrown.

 

Beginning Agility Sequences – Ericka Erickson

Wednesdays, Jan 14, 21, 28, Feb 4, 11, 18 – 7:30 pm – 8:15 pm

5 Student Max

Prerequisite – Completion of Beginner Agility of approval of the instructor.

This class will build on the skills learned in beginner agility by adding in short sequences of

3-5 jumps and tunnels. The teams will learn basic handling skills to navigate their dogs through the sequences. Dogs should be comfortable working off leash and be able to take tunnels and jumps.

Intro to Nose Work/Scent Work – Roger Lautt

Thursdays, Jan 15, 22, 29, Feb 5 – 5:00 pm – 5:45 pm

3 Student Min, 6 Student Max

The object of this class is to introduce dogs and their handlers to the rapidly growing, fun sport of scent work. The focus of all Nose Work classes will be for the dog and handler to have fun. Intro to nose work/scent work is well suited for all dogs, except for human aggressive dogs. The sport will strengthen the bond between dog and build dogs confidence. This class teaches the foundation skills necessary to progress with the sport, for mere enjoyment or for competition. Intro to nose work/scent work will give your dog a sense of purpose and will enable your dog to discover and enhance his/her natural desire to hunt. It harnesses a dog’s unique ability to detect scent and determine the source, all while having fun.

 

Advanced Manners – Beth Jernberg

Thursdays, Jan 15, 22, 29, Feb 5 – 6:00 PM – 6:45 pm

Beth Jernberg has trained four therapy dogs, and she has over 10 years of experience as a Therapy Dog International handler in schools, libraries, hospitals, and senior care facilities.

Prerequisites: Successfully completed the Fundamentals for the Family Dog class, or a Basic Obedience class. Dogs must be 1 year old. No collars with moving parts or e collars are allowed in this class.

This class is the next step beyond the Fundamentals for the Family Dog class, with a goal of solidifying obedience skills during distracting situations and applying socialization. If you are interested in volunteer service with your dog as a Therapy Dog Team, you can practice calm socialization with other dogs and humans, interacting with people who are using various medical equipment, and being greeted by a crowd of people. These are all normal therapy dog activities.

 

Conformation – Tracy Duff

Drop Ins Welcomed

Whether you are experienced in the show ring or beginner in conformation we will tailor the class to fir everyone’s needs. The purpose of dog shows is to evaluate breeding stock to each breeds standard. You will learn ring procedures, how to stack your dog and move at a correct speed. This is a great class to learn how to work as a team with your dog. Please bring a proper leash and bait/treats to class. Drop ins welcomed. All drop ins must sign a waiver and bring a copy of your dog’s vaccination record to class. Drop ins are $15/class.

Novice Obedience – Ginny Beck

Saturdays, Jan 17, 14, 31, Feb 7, 14, 21 – 10:00 am – 10:45 am

5 Student Min, 7 Student Max

Novice Obedience is for those who wish to compete competitively in AKC Novice Obedience Trials. The fundamentals of feeling, sitting, down and recall when commanded to do so will be taught. Also, the use of markers and cues. Each student will be provided with a copy of the AKC rules for Beginner Novice as well as Novice A Obedience with a clear explanation of what can and cannot be allowed in the show ring. Students are to bring a 6 – foot lead and a collar (ex: slip chain, flat buckle, martingale) as a proper leash and collar application will be discussed.

Open & Utility Skills – Hollie Huss

Saturdays, Jan 17, 14, 31, Feb 7, 14, 21 – 11:00 am – 11:45 am

3 Student Min, 6 Student Max

This class will be an intro to Open and Utility skills. Handlers will learn how to start teaching skills such as the broad jump, drop on recall, command discrimination, go outs, direct jumping, moving stand and directed retrieves. Requirements will be that handlers are comfortable having their dog work off leash with other dogs working around them. Dogs do not need to have a novice title, but handler need to have knowledge of teaching the novice exercises.
